SSA Celebrate 1st 10 years
July 2012 This year's SSA Birthday Bash was something different we had a Skittle Night at The Kings Head in Wickham.  This was a really fun night that consisted of a bar meal and skittles - of course! Prizes were awarded for highest scores with Andy Steele winning the mens skittles while Theresa Stubbs won the Ladies and Aaron Cooke won the kids competition.

SSA Away!  Cardigan Bay!
June 2012 This is what Solent Skiers are famous for - an organized weekend away, camping, ski-ing and having fun!  Over the Queen's Jubilee weekend SSA members and their families went to Wales.  This is something we do every so often but longer weekends are needed to make the distance towing worthwhile.  We were quite lucky with the weather and were able to take a run out on the Friday evening once most of the tents were up followed by bar-be-que and lots of beers.  Andy D brought along some home made toffee vodka that set the standard for the weekend!  On Friday we took a ride up along the coast to Aberystwyth and Aberdovey where we found some waves to play in before heading back to base camp.  Saturday was pretty much washed out with rain so trips out and about around the area by car was followed by us taking over the local pub and having our own impromptu Kareoke party!  On Sunday the weather was perfect for a cruise out.  We put launching back by about an hour as there were dolphins playing in the bay and we were lucky to encounter a pod just past Aberporth where we stopped for lunch.  A great time was had by all and we're looking forward to organising our next SSA Away trip!

SSA Riders Win Win Win!
May 2012

The AquaX season got under way this month at Plymouth and we had five Solent Skiers competing across all three classes and all five finished with Podium places!

Jim Goodchild took 1st place in the 300 Class. “To be honest I did not come to Plymouth expecting to win, so I am really pleased”, said Jim. “Sunday’s race was really close, Russell kept me honest all the way but I held him off right to the end and I am really pleased with the weekend’s result. I will be getting some more hours riding on my ski before Hull as I know it’s going to be a close fight between us all year.”

Mat Shipley was back in the 250 Class for his second season and also got the series off to a brilliant start by winning Saturday’s race and finishing second in Sunday’s encounter to last year’s Am300 Champion Dave Huddleston.

But it was in the 200 Class that SSA riders dominated.  Duncan Johnstone, the reigning champion started his campaign with a brace of wins closely followed by Andy Steel and Steve Hockney for a SSA and Yamaha FX podium lock out.

“Solent Skiers Club riders were 1, 2 and 3 on the podium on Sunday which is a very good showing for the beginning of the season”, Duncan said. “With Jim and Mat winning the 300 and 250 Class it’s looking like our club is becoming a good breeding ground for AquaX racers!"

Well Done on SSA's 1st RYA Course of the year!
April 2012 Well done to Solent Skiers Ian Wintle, Ricky Oram, Steve Hockney and Zoe Wheeler on completing their PWC Proficiency Course with the club's instructors.  All are now looking forward to trips out with the club. Steve is brand new to the sport and plans to enter Aqua Cross this season on his Yamaha FX160.

Zoe who has been ski-ing since last August said, "Thank you all involved for making the day both fun & informative! Highly recommended! Thanks also must go to my most trusting other half for lending me the ski (well for a time anyway :) while he was slogging his guts out at work! Really good day."

In a bid to fix their falling numbers, the crews are holding an open day later this month for anyone who might be interested in joining them.

Solent Skiers Association's First British Champion!
February 2012

The DeVere Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton was the venue last Saturday for the RYA 2011 Powerboat Racing Awards Ceremony, which celebrated the achievements of Britain's powerboat racers. The P1 AquaX Championship was very much part of the evening, with Championship Manager Lisa Barsby representing the UK race series.

Speaking at the event, Lisa said: "2011 was an exciting and successful inaugural year for the P1 AquaX Championship here in the UK and it's great to see our race champions being honoured here tonight. The riders are at the heart of our series and they all deserve praise and recognition."

Pictured below: Russell Marmon received his award as P1 AquaX 300 Champion, together with the AquaX 200 class winner, Duncan Johnstone.

Duncan said that last year was great fun, physically and mentally challenging and that he couldn't believe he was on the same start line as 'proper' racers. "Being on the same start line as James Bushell, the current World Champion is really quite special.  I know we're in different classes and he's an athlete at the top of his game but I'm on the same start line as World class riders!"

"I've met some great people through the season and I'm really proud of what I've achieved. I have an awful lot to thank the Solent Skiers for, if it wasn't for all the events we do and the conditions we ride in month in month out I don't think I would have had it in me to keep the throttle open in a lot of the races.  The support from the SSA has been fantastic the club has really got behind all our racers, I'm looking forward to racing with even more Solent Skiers this year!"

Hot Stuff!
January 2012

Happy New Year everyone!  As usual the Club got the year off to its traditional start with the annual SSA Chilli Cruise.  It was a cold and blustery day but our members still went out anyway (there's no Chilli till you've done the Cruise!).  This year's chilli was lovingly prepared by Club Secretary Penny, she also made a smaller pot which was not so hot for those not so keen on the winter warmer!  We had the BBQ on the go as well with burgers and baps, thanks Sean and for desert  Jill's world famous Keylime Pie rounded it all off beautifully!

The skiers took a lumpy ride over to Osbourne Bay where they were out the wind and found some flat water for a wide open blast along to Ryde and back before returning to the slipway and the nosh.  As is now customary none of the riders were fed until all of the skis were recovered, with all hands on SSA style, making light work of the task.

Roll on the rest of 2012, we've got a fun year ahead!
